Keep On Masturbating! Guest Post with Sherryl Blu

a foamy seaside wave splashes against the shore with the word, MASTURBATE in pink across it.

I am beyond thrilled to welcome Sherryl Blu to the Ruby Glow blog who is here to remind us of something really important as we begin to enter some stages of normality...

Masturbation is more than just a lockdown pastime!

We’ve been social distancing for the best part of four months now which means, not only has our regular daily lives been affected, but it’s highly likely the amount of time spent indulging in some kind of sexual activity with another body, has taken a bit of a beating too!

If you were casually having sex with someone, chances are that has stopped or at least slowed down. Even if you had a regular boyfriend, girlfriend or both before quarantine, unless you live together or you were adhering to the so-called lockdown rules, your time spent with them would have been reduced massively.

It’s safe to say, a lot has changed because of COVID-19 yet our needs and desires still remained. Lockdown has forced many of us to reacquaint ourselves intimately with our bodies and indulge in regular, healthy doses of self-love.

Interestingly, this fact has contributed to a shift in how masturbation is viewed especially where women are concerned. Conversations are easier and where previously there was a lot of embarrassment and shame with many women unable to talk openly. This is quickly being replaced with the understanding that masturbation is a natural function that impacts our overall wellbeing for the better.

Personally, I’m particularly pleased that the long standing and unjustified taboo that surrounds this perfectly healthy act, seems to be slowly diminishing and the ridiculously archaic myths about alleged harmful side effects of masturbation, are fast becoming silly little memories. I don’t think we need official stats to tell us that masturbation has increased during lockdown. We’ve literally had no choice but to really appreciate the importance of self-pleasure and the fact that there are a whole bunch of very valid reasons why self-stimulation during self-isolation is beneficial.

It’s a self-indulgent no brainer!

Masturbation not only allows you to feel satisfied sexually, but there are also many other physical and psychological benefits including; stress relief, mood boosting, it can help you to relax and it can also contribute to a better night’s sleep. In addition, women that masturbate can benefit from menstrual cramp relief and there is some research that encourages men to masturbate often in order to help lower the risk of prostate cancer.

Overall, masturbation can potentially make anyone feel good. Masturbation helps you to understand your body and know what it likes thus providing grounds for more pleasurable sex all round. On the whole, it would seem people are happy to share the fact they are limited to self-pleasuring because of their lack of sexual contact with others and actually, this sends a clear message that masturbation is one sexual option that we all have access to with no questions necessary.

Amazingly, lockdown has served as a gateway to normalising talk around masturbation. I am absolutely here for it and hope that as we attempt to resume a normal life, the idea of masturbation remains a positive one!

And I'm sure we're all for here that!

Keep on masturbating! It's not just for lockdown!
